CBD, explained without the marketing

What CBD is, what full spectrum actually means, and how to read a tincture label so you know what you are getting.

CBD is cannabidiol, one of well over a hundred cannabinoids the plant produces. Unlike THC it is not intoxicating, which is the main reason it ended up in everything from tinctures to sparkling water.

We are not going to tell you what it does for you. Those claims are not ours to make, and anyone making them confidently is telling you something about themselves. What we can do is explain what is in the bottle.

Isolate, broad spectrum, full spectrum

Isolate is CBD on its own, everything else stripped out. It is the only way to be confident a product contains no THC at all.

Broad spectrum keeps the other cannabinoids and terpenes but removes the THC. Full spectrum keeps everything the plant made, including a small, compliant amount of delta-9 THC.

None of these is better than the others in the abstract. Full spectrum is a different product from isolate, not an upgraded one.

How to read the strength

A bottle labelled 3,200mg is telling you what is in the whole bottle, not what is in a dose. Divide by the number of servings to get the per-serving figure — a 30mL bottle is usually thirty 1mL droppers.

Then check that number against the certificate of analysis. The label is the formulation target; the COA is what the lab actually measured. They will differ slightly, and that is normal.

One thing worth knowing

Products described as THC-free are usually reported as 'ND' — non-detect — on a lab report. That means below the laboratory's detection threshold, not mathematically zero. If you are subject to workplace drug testing, do not rely on it.
